Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with Oryon CPU confirmed for October

Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Don McGuire, made an interesting announcement at MWC 2024. Mobile silicon space is set to become even more interesting as Qualcomm is preparing to unveil the Snapdragon Gen 4 SoC with its custom ‘Oryon’ CPU.

Don confirmed that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit will be happening in October 2024, where the company will unveil its flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC.

He also encouraged people to embrace AI and commented that it won’t replace humans anytime soon. According to him, AI will act as the 6th sense/second brain.

As of now Qualcomm is using ARM-based CPU cores for all its processors, and moving to custom CPU cores will give a competitive advantage and would compete with Apple’s chipsets. There should also be an improved neural processing unit (NPU) on the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset.

It is said to come with a 2+6 core combination, eliminating efficiency cores completely. The company is expected to use TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process for the chipset, which increases power efficiency, aiding the absence of efficiency cores.

As per current rumors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is being tested at a 4GHz frequency, compared to 3.30GHz on its predecessor, and is expected to compete with Apple’s M3 chipset. However, these are early rumors, and we should expect more details in the coming months.
