Apple has introduced transcripts for Apple Podcasts, a new feature available with the iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 update.
Transcripts for Apple Podcasts
Transcripts display the full text of each episode, allowing users to read along while listening. With transcripts, users can search for specific words or phrases within an episode and easily navigate to different parts by tapping on the text.
Transcripts offer several benefits to users, including helping them catch every word from their favorite hosts, aiding in language learning, and facilitating fact-finding within episodes.
The feature is accessible from the Now Playing screen, improving accessibility for users who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
Apple has designed transcripts with accessibility in mind, ensuring easy readability with appropriate font and color contrast. This design choice makes long-form text easier to scan and read, aligning with Apple’s commitment to accessibility.
Transcripts do not offer translations between languages. They will be automatically available for new episodes shortly after publication, with older episodes being transcribed over time.
Options for Creators
Creators who prefer to provide their own transcripts can do so through RSS tags or Apple Podcasts Connect for subscriber episodes.
iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 Update
This update offers new options for residents of the European Union, including the ability to:
- Install apps from alternative app marketplaces
- Install web browsers with alternative browser engines
- Manage default web browsers when opening Safari for the first time
- Manage default contactless payment apps
- Use alternative payment options for apps in the App Store with the external purchases badge, some of which require developer support.
Emoji and Other Features
The update introduces new emoji such as mushrooms, phoenixes, limes, broken chains, and shaking heads, as well as the ability to face 18 people and body emoji in either direction.
Additionally, it includes improvements to music recognition, Siri options for message announcements, and enhanced security features for stolen devices.
Availability
Transcripts are now accessible for podcasts in English, French, German, and Spanish, with older episodes being transcribed over time.
Users in more than 170 countries and regions can access transcripts using iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4.
